Brisbane flood brace for worst

In Australia, Brisbane's flood disaster is about to take a turn for the worse as the south-east Queensland city faces a flood peak to rival the 1974 crisis. After a day of eerily calm weather, which saw waters slip into backyards, residents are being told to prepare for a shocking and remarkable challenge.Already thousands of homes in some Brisbane suburbs have waters past the second-storey after on Wednesday's peak reached 4.2 metres. But the crisis is set to worsen with the river to peak at 5.2 metres in the early hours of tomorrow morning.Over 113,000 houses are now without power, and supermarkets have had their shelves stripped bare by panicked residents facing the prospect of days of uncertainty and isolation.More than 3,500 people are in evacuation centres in Ipswich and Brisbane. More than 3,000 homes and businesses were swamped in Ipswich as the Bremer River moved towards a peak of 19.5 metres. That revised level is below the 1974 flood level, but 30,000 homes in the area are still without power. Twelve people are confirmed dead, and grave fears are held for at least nine more, as authorities continue the grim search for bodies in the Lockyer Valley.Meanwhile, police have charged three men for looting in Brisbane's west. All three men will face court next month.
