The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today urged BRICS countries to speak in one voice on issues such as reforms in the United Nations Security Council, UNSC. New Delhi has been advocating to reform the UNSC and other World bodies with representation to emerging economies like India.
Dr. Singh was inaugurating the 4th BRICS summit in New Delhi today. Dr. Singh called for ensuring policy coordination to revive economic growth. In his brief speech Dr Singh added that in the restricted session all the countries agreed to work together for a peaceful resolution of West Asian crisis. He said the countries of the grouping must avoid political disruptions that create volatilities in global energy markets and affect trade flow. Prime Minister stressed the need to enhance cooperation against terrorism and other threats such as piracy, particularly emanating from Somalia
AIR Correspondent reports that the Leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will also discuss steps to jointly respond to the common challenges. Some agreements are expected to be signed allowing individual development banks to extend credit to other members and boosting cooperation in the development of the infrastructure. Ahead of the summit level meeting, Trade and Economic Ministers emphasized the need to resist protectionist tendencies and to promote international trade.
