BRICS summit begins in south China's resort city of Sanya

Third BRICS summit began Thursday morning in China's port city of Sanya. The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh along with the Leaders of the world's four other emerging economies Brazil, Russia, China and south Africa are expected to work out common positions on key economic issues ahead of the G-20 summit in France later this year . The summit meeting is being chaired by Chinese President Hu Jintao. The leaders of five emerging economies will take stock of the global economic situation besides focusing on food availability and their prices, climate talks and sustainable development. The BRICS Leaders will also discuss the crises situation in Libya and some other North African countries as it has resulted in the volatility in the international oil prices. Ahead of the summit the trade ministers of these countries presented a picture of unity and rejected the growing demand of the developed nations to provide them easy access to their markets. The ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa favoured a continuation of the Doha round on the basis of a preliminary agreement that brought the talks nearly to a final deal in mid-2008 but rejected demands that developing countries now need to make more concessions. They also pushed Russia’s case for inclusion in the WTO. AIR correspondent covering the summit reports from the venue that the leaders of these countries have been advocating for a pro active G-20 and formulate a coherent strategy for the post crises period. The grouping is confident that emerging market economies and developing countries have the potential to play a larger and active role as engines of economic growth and prosperity. A declaration will be issued at the end of the summit in which South Africa is participating for the first time.
