BRICS pledge support for India’s quest for permanent UNSC seat

The Group of five developing countries of Brazil, Russia , India, China and South Africa – BRICS – today pledged support for India’s quest for permanent membership to the UN security council. The declaration adopted at the end of the summit says that the grouping reaffirms the need for a comprehensive reform of the UN including its security council to make it representative, effective and efficient reflecting the contemporary realities.Addressing the Summit at Sanya in China, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said that an important objective must remain the reform of institutions of global governance to make them truly representative. He emphasized that this should be the case whether it is the reform of political and security governance structures in the United Nations or the international financial, monetary or trade system. Responding to questions on the issue, the Secretary East in the Ministry of External Affairs Manbir Singh said that this is a consensus statement, qualifying greater role for India and two other non Permanent members of the UNSC at the world Body. This, he said, is clearly a support for India for its bid to be the member of the U.N. Security Council.
