BRICS meeting on 'Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency' begins today

A two-day international conference of the BRICS Working Group on 'Energy Savings and Energy Efficiency' gets underway today in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. <br/><br/>Over 30 delegates from Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa besides host India are participating in the conference.<br/><br/>It is expected that the BRICS nations would chalk out a plan for enhancing future cooperation in energy efficiency during the two-day deliberations.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, the delegates of BRICS countries will make presentations on measures taken by them in the field of energy saving and energy efficiency, while India will also showcase its efforts in energy saving, energy efficiency, in particular the LED street lighting programme and Performance Achievement and Trade (PAT) programme for Industrial energy efficiency.<br/><br/>The Working Group on Energy Saving & Energy Efficiency representing five major emerging economies brought together under BRICS, will also deliberate on a Work Plan on development of cooperation in energy saving & energy efficiency.<br/><br/>The Centre has chosen the successful LED street lighting programme of Visakhapatnam city to be specially showcased to the visiting delegates. <br/><br/>By switching to the energy-efficient LED street lighting, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation could save electricity to the tune of 70 lakh units, translating to a saving of Rs 4.20 crore per annum.<br/><br/>Additional Secretary B.P. Pandey (Union Power Ministry), Ms. Anju Bhalla Joint Secretary International Cooperation, Energy Efficiency Services Limited MD Saurabh Kumar, Bureau of Energy Efficiency Secretary Sanjay Seth participated in the conference on behalf of India.<br/><br/>Port City Visakhapatnam will also host a three-day 3rd BRICS Urban Forum meeting, from September 14 to 16, which would throw light on the challenges faced by the cities and the emergence of new urban spaces with rapid urbanisation.
