Brazil and the United States have signed a military cooperation accord aimed at expanding joint research, training and exercises. The US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, called it a formal acknowledgement of the shared security interests and values between the two most populous democracies in the Americas. The agreement comes despite Brazil's opposition to the decision by Colombia to grant American military access to its bases as well as diplomatic differences over attitudes to Iran's nuclear programme.
