In Brazil, a truck and a bus collided in the southern state of Santa Catarina, killing at least 25 people as Brazil celebrated Carnival. Earlier reports had put the death toll at 22 but some injured persons died after being taken to hospital. Police said the bus was carrying nearly 50 people when it hit a truck carrying timber near the town of Descanso, 690 kilometres west of the state capital of Florianopolis, near Brazil's border with Argentina. The accident when Brazilians took to the roads in large numbers for the Carnival celebrations.
