Braving bad weather condition, people of Pudhucherry today celebrated Diwali – the festival of lights, with pomp and gaiety. Like neighbouring Tamilnadu, with which Pudhucherry shares common socio-cultural and religious history, people in this former French Colony celebrate Diwali in the Tamil month of AIPASI Narak chaturdarshi thithi preceding Amavasai.<br/><br/>People woke up early in the morning and had oil bath as per the custom. The houses were washed and colourful Diwali Rangolis were drawn at the entrance to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Crackers and new dresses smeared with little sandal paste were placed in front of the portrait of goddess. After tasting sweets and breakfast,family members wore new dresses and children got the blessings of elders. People burst crakers and exchanged greetings and sweets among friends and relatives. A large number of devotees lined up in various temples including the famous Manakula vinayagar temple and participated in the special pujas.
