Boxers Vikas Krishan and Manoj Kumar qualify for Rio Olympics

Asian Games champion Vikas Krishan today booked Olympic berth after advancing to the semifinals of the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) World Qualifying Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan. Second seed Vikas got past Korea's Lee Dongyun by a 3-nil margin in quarter finals.Vikas will now be up against Turkmenistan's Achilov Arslanbek in the semifinal tomorrow. Vikas has now taken the total number of Indian boxers assured of Olympic berths to three. Shiva Thapa had made the cut in the 56 kilogram category for Rio during the Asian Qualifiers in March. Former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, Manoj Kumar also qualified for the Olympic Games today.Former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, Manoj Kumar today became the second Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympic Games. He qualified after advancing to the semifinals of the AIBA World Qualifying Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan, beating Tajikistan's Rakhimov Shavkatdzhon in the quarterfinal 3-nil in the 64 kilogram category. Manoj Kumar will now face European champion Pat McCormack of Britain in the semifinal tomorrow. Manoj, also a former Asian Championships bronze-medallist, had competed in the 2012 London Games as well and had lost in the quarterfinals. Before Manoj, Shiva Thapa had made the cut in the 56 kilogram category for the Rio Games during the Asian Qualifying Tournament held in China this March.
