Amnesty International says supporters of both sides in the recent conflict in the Ivory Coast committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. A report by the group quotes evidence of massacres and rapes between the disputed Presidential election in November and the arrests last month of the former President Laurent Gbagbo. Amnesty also accuses United Nations peacekeepers of failing to protect civilians from a massacre which took place only a kilometer from their base. At least three thousand people died in the fighting and hundreds of thousands were displaced after the incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo refused to accept defeat in last year's election. The most serious violence came in a western town where hundreds of people were killed when the town fell into the hands of forces loyal to the new President Alassane Ouattara.
