Both Houses of Parliament adjourned for the day over demonetisation, Nagrota attack

Uproar by the Opposition in Parliament over the demonetisation issue led to repeated adjournments of both the Houses today. The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice before it was adjourned for the day in the pre-lunch session, amidst opposition sticking to their demand for a debate on the issue under the rule which entails voting. The Rajya Sabha also witnessed two adjournments before adjourning finally for the day.<br/><br/>Proceedings in both the Houses were washed away in the first half of the Winter Session due to tussle between treasury and opposition benches over the demonetisation issue. <br/><br/>As soon as the Lok Sabha met after first adjournment at Noon, Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress said the discussion should start under any rule which has voting provisions.<br/><br/>Bhartruhari Mahatab of Biju Janata Dal suggested an immediate discussion on the hardships faced by people due to demonetization. Responding to it, Finance Minister Arun Jaitely said the government is ready for a discussion. <br/><br/>Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the government wants a discussion on the issue without voting and send a message that the House is united to fight against black money. <br/><br/>Members of Congress, TMC, Left and others trooped into the well raising slogans and later Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House till 12.45 PM. Amid noisy scene some members raised the matters of public importance during Zero hour. <br/><br/>Earlier, when the House met for the day, Opposition led by Congress demanded an obituary reference to the jawans killed in the Nagrota terror attack. The Speaker said that the combing operation is still continuing and the government is gathering the details about the incident. She said it should not be an issue at all. <br/><br/>Expressing dissatisfaction, the opposition staged a brief walkout from the House. <br/><br/>In the Rajya Sabha, when the House re-assembled at 2 PM after second adjournment, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azd demanded that Defence Minister should make a statement on the killing of Indian Jawans in Nagrota sector in Jammu and Kashmir. <br/><br/>Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said combing operations are still underway and lashed at the opposition for their unruly behaviour. Not satisfied with the minister's reply, Opposition members continued to shout slogans. Deputy Chairman Prof. P J Kurien adjourned the House for the day.<br/><br/>Earlier, Leader of House, Arun Jaitley told the agitating members that the discussion on demonetisation is going on and the government is ready for a discussion on killings at the border.<br/><br/>Mayawati of BSP alleged that the government is not concerned about the prevailing situation in the country due to demonetisation. <br/><br/>Ram Gopal Yadav of Samajwadi Party said the government should pay compensation of 10 Lakh rupees each to the next of the kin of those died in long queues. BJP members also raised counter slogans from their seats.
