Bonded labourers freed in Tamilnadu

Forty bonded labourers, including 12 women and four children, were rescued from the clutches of a landlord by the police in Tamilnadu. Labourers were rescued with the help of members of 'Evidence', an NGO at Kadapparai Kuzhi, a remote hamlet between Theni and Dindigul districts. The landlord was arrested. The Police on Friday said the rescued labourers belong to 'Paliar', a tribal community. They were working as bonded labourers in a brick kiln and a farm for more than a decade, owned by landlord Mayandi. Later, the rescued people met Theni district collector P Muthu Veeran and narrated their tale of woe and appealed to the district administration to take steps to retrieve their land from the landlord.
