Bombay HC to begin hearing on confirmation of death sentence to Kasab

A thick security blanket has been thrown in and around the Bombay High Court which will from today hear the arguments on confirmation of death sentence awarded to Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab for his role in 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Kasab, who has challenged his conviction and sentence, is currently lodged in a bomb and bullet proof cell at Central Prison.State's counsel Ujjwal Nikam will open arguments on the confirmation of death sentence awarded to Kasab for killing 166 people in the deadly terror attacks in Mumbai on November 26, 2008. The hearing, on a day-to-day basis, would begin in the court of Justices Ranjana Desai and R V More. Though a confirmation case requires the convict to be present during the hearings, but due to security reasons and as per the directive of the earlier court order, Kasab will be produced through video conferencing from his high-security prison cell in Arthur Road jail in south central Mumbai. Unprecedented security measures have been ordered in the court premises with strict regulations on the entry of lawyers, litigants, mediapersons, court employees and others in Court No. 49. Today, the court is also likely to hear the state's plea against the acquittal of Kasab's co-accused Faheem Ansari and Sabahuddin Ahmed, who were acquitted for lack of evidence.
