The Bombay High Court today ordered Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods Institute to return 20 acres of land in suburban Goregaon to the Maharashtra government. A division bench of the court ordered Subhash Ghai to immediately vacate and hand over the 14.5 acre plot. Keeping in mind the duration of ongoing courses at the film training institute; the court asked the state government to take over the remaining 5.5 acre land, on which the institute stands, on 31st July, 2014. The court has also restrained Whistling Woods from granting admissions to students for courses which will go beyond 2014. The court has further directed Mr. Ghai to pay an annual rent of Rupees 5.3 crore since 2000, the institute’s inception year. The bench has however stayed its order for eight weeks and allowed Subhash Ghai to approach Supreme Court. The court was today hearing a public interest litigation filed by Rajendra Sontakke and four other agriculturists alleging gross abuse of power by former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in allotting the land.
