Bombay HC admits Kasab’s appeal against death sentence

The Bombay High Court has admitted 26/11 accused Ajmal Kasab’s appeal against the death sentence awarded to him by Mumbai’s special court. Kasab’s lawyers Amin Solkar and Farhana Shah had yesterday filed the appeal on behalf of Kasab and had also sought his acquittal on 57 other grounds. The Division Bench constituting of Justices Ranjana Desai and R V More admitted the appeal and said that the hearing of this case would be held on a day-to-day basis from October 18. The bench said that this case would be given top priority and it would not hear any other case till Kasab’s matter is heard and disposed of. The court will decide on October 6 as to who will open the arguments, the state or the defence. The Court has ordered Kasab to appear through video conferencing and has asked the state to complete the necessary arrangements for the same in the court premises and also inside Kasab’s special enclosure.The court has decided to simultaneously hear the state’s plea on the confirmation of Kasab’s death sentence and also the one challenging the special court’s order acquitting Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin Sheikh in the case.
