The body of Thomas Cherian, Consul General of India at Mazar-e-Sharief in Afghanistan, was flown back to India today for last rights. He succumbed to serious head injuries due to a fall at his residence on Thursday. Mr. Cherian was immediately shifted to the International Security Assistance Force hospital at Mazar-e-Shafief and given necessary medical assistance but could not be revived due to brain hemorrhage and severe internal bleeding. He is survived by his wife and two children.
External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has condoled the untimely demise of Mr. Cherian. He said, Cherian was a devoted and competent officer who was serving his nation with dedication.
