Bodies of 29 miners died in underground explosions in NZ will remain entombed

The bodies of 29 miners who died in underground explosions will remain entombed in New Zealand's Pike River coal mine. New Zealand Police Commissioner Howard Broad said it will be too dangerous to recover the bodies of the men, who died in November. The mine has been unstable since a series of explosions ripped through it in mid-November. Commissioner Broad made the announcement at a news conference in Greymouth today after meeting with the men's families. Declaring the police recovery operation officially over, he said mining experts have told him that it was unrealistic to think the mine will be made safe enough to attempt a recovery.
