In Bangladesh, the main opposition party the BNP has called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal on February 7 in protest against a case filed against its chairperson Khaleda Zia in relation to the recent violent protests against a proposed new airport. The party’s Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain announced the decision to organize a hartal at a rally at Muktangan in the capital city Dhaka on Wednesday. The BNP’s move comes against the backdrop of a local Awami League leader in Munshiganj filing a case accusing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for instigating Monday's violence. One Police sub-inspector was killed and more than fifty people including several policemen were injured in clashes between police and people protesting against the proposed Bangabandhu International Airport in the Arial Beel area.AIR correspondent reports, the protests against the proposed new Bangabandhu International airport has turned into a full scale political battle, with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia being blamed for instigating the protestors.The BNP which organized countrywide demonstrations on Wednesday against the case has now called for a complete shutdown on February 7th in support of its demand for withdrawal of the case. The airport project ran into trouble with protestors claiming that the project will lead to the loss of agricultural land and the Arial Beel wetland.The Leader of the opposition and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has criticized the government’s move to set up a new airport as she claimed that the existing international airport is not being utilized properly.
