Blake satisfied over resettlement of civilians in Sri Lanka

Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia and Central Asia and former US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Robert Blake on Tuesday expressed satisfaction with the government’s resettlement programme which is underway and the new freedom of movement allowed and said that he was pleased with the mine risk education being given to students.AIR Correspondent reports that in the light of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee bipartisan study Report recommending policy shift and ‘less confrontational approach’ towards Sri Lanka.The two day visit of Robert Blake, to the island nation to encourage post-war reconciliation in the island nation is being watched with special interest.The Sri Lankan Government said on Tuesday that Robert Blake after his visit to the Manik farm welfare camp in Vavuniya has expressed satisfaction at the resettlement programme of the war displaced Tamil civilians. For the first time, the numbers of IDPs living in the camp have come down below one lakh.Blake, formerly the ambassador to Colombo, is scheduled to meet with "government officials, political leaders and important members of the civil society". He is one of the highest ranking US official to visit the island nation after the end of the three decade long guerilla war.Blake during his visit is also likely to meet the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. In another important development, a reliable government source said that Sri Lankan President, in what can be seen as a confidence building measure has directed the Justice Minister to give an immediate report on all those persons held under detention order and against whom they have insufficient evidence with a view to their early release.This decision of the President is likely to benefit hundreds of Tamil civilians detained on suspicion of links with LTTE.
