BJP urges PM to personally intervene on climate change issue

Expressing serious concern over the reported deviation from India's earlier position on climate change, the BJP today urged the Prime Minister to personally intervene in the matter. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Arun Jaitley said that Dr. Manmohan should prevent the Environment Minister from shifting from India's national position and going in favour of the developed countries. He alleged that Mr. Jairam Ramesh in his statement on the eve of the UN Climate Summit Cancun has been quoted as suggesting that India is prepared to engage in a system of monitoring, review, verification International consultations and analysis of domestic climate actions. Mr. Arun Jaitley said that by doing so Mr. Jairam Ramesh has committed India to International Verification of unsupported domestic action. Mr. Jaitely said that this was not India's position or that of the developing countries. Questioning the change in the stand, the BJP leader alleged that this is against the assurances given in parliament and also runs contrary to the mandate of the G-77 alliance and the elementary principal of equity.
