BJP to put across views on anti-rape bill after presentation in parl; BSP to support, SP to oppose bill

The Bharatiya Janata Party said today it is in favour of a strong act to check the violence against the women in the country as it is need of the time for women`s security.

Talking to media persons outside Parliament party`s spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that his party would put its views on Criminal Amendment Bill after its presentation in Parliament.

He expressed hope that the government will come forward with strong provisions on violence against women.Replying to a question the BJP leader did not make any commitment about support for the Bill but said each and every one in the country is in favour of a strong Act for women`s security.

The Samajwadi Party said today it would oppose the criminal Amendment Bill. Party`s leader in Rajya Sabha Ram Gopal Yadav told the media persons outside the Parliament that lowering the age limit for consent to sex is totally incorrect and unreasonable.

He said several provisions proposed in the Amendment are unacceptable to his party. Replying to a question, Mr. Yadav said that his party would oppose the Amendment in the all – party meeting scheduled on March 18.

On the other hand, the Bahujan Samaj party supremo Mayawati said that her party is in favour of the Amendment. Talking to reporters outside Parliament she said the proposed Amendment will be effective to check the incidents of rape.

She said her party will put its suggestions to the Amendment during the discussion on the Bill in Parliament. She said in any case the Amendment it will not be opposed by her party.
