BJP terms SC's verdict on NJAC as a setback to the sovereignty of Parliament

The ruling BJP has termed the Supreme Court's decision on the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act as a setback to sovereignty of Parliament. Briefing reporters in New Delhi yesterday, senior party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Act was passed after consultations for 20 years and all political parties had unanimously supported it in Parliament.,Mr Prasad ,who had piloted the Bill as Law Minister, pointed out that 20 state legislatures also accorded their approval. The apex Court had yesterday declared the NJAC Act as unconstitutional. The Act was meant to replace the two-decade old collegium system of appointing judges in higher judiciary.

Maintaining that the government does not believe in a confrontation with Judiciary, Mr. Prasad said the Centre is fully committed to independence of the judiciary. He said, the BJP and the government will give a structured reply after going through the judgment of the Apex court. However the opposition Congress said, it respected the Supreme court judgement and said independence of judiciary is the key factor in the democracy and that can never be compromised.
