BJP sets up committee to discuss presidential election with political parties

BJP President Amit Shah today constituted a three-member committee to consult political parties to reach a consensus about a presidential candidate. The committee comprising senior Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and M Venkaiah Naidu will hold talks with BJP allies and opposition parties for the election and try to evolve a consensus. <br/><br/>Opposition parties including Congress, Left and JD(U) are expected to hold a meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss their strategy. Earlier also, they had held consultations among themselves over the issue. AIR correspondent reports that with just two days left for nomination process for election to the highest constitutional post, political parleys have begun to select country's next President. While the ruling BJP has set up a Committee to forge consensus on the issue, the Opposition parties have also set in motion consultation process. The BJP has been assiduously wooing its NDA allies including the Shiv Sena and other regional parties like AIADMK, Telugu Desam Party and Telangana Rashtra Samiti to support their choice. Congress is also looking to wrest regional support to edge past NDA. However, JD(U) President and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar feels that the opposition should field a candidate only when attempts to field a consensus candidate fail. <br/><br/>The filing of nomination for the election will begin on 14th of this month and continue till 28th of June. If needed, the poll will take place on 17th of July. The term of President Pranab Mukherjee is ending on 24th of July. <br/>'President is elected by an electoral college comprising elected members of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and state legislative assemblies. It also includes assemblies of Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry.

BJP President Amit Shah has set up a committee to hold discussion with different political parties in connection with the upcoming Presidential election. The Committee will comprise Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and M. Venkaiah Naidu. <br/><br/>A press release issued by the party in New Delhi said the committee will try to forge a consensus on the name of candidate for the post of president by holding discussions with the leaders of different political parties.
