BJP says SC's observation nails Bhatt political connections

BJP today said the Supreme Court's observation that attempts were made through politics and activism to influence the proceedings on Gujarat riots, has vindicated its stand that Congress patronized groups and selected bureaucrats were trying to defame the Gujarat government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi, senior party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt was in close contact with Congress leaders and exchanged emails about the proceedings of Nanavati Commission. Mr. Prasad said that it is regrettable that a police officer was allowing his office to be manipulated for pure partisan act of Congress.

Yesterday, the Apex Court rejected Bhatt's claim that he was present in a meeting in 2002 at the residence of the then Gujarat Chief Minister where Mr. Modi allegedly asked the police to be soft on those engaged in riots. It also rejected the plea to investigate BJP President Amit Shah's role for allegedly trying to scuttle probe into cases of encounter killings.
