BJP says it has open mind on Women Reservation Bill

BJP today said it has an open mind on the Women Reservation Bill. Taking to reporters in New Delhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Mrs Sushma Swaraj said that the party will not, however, sacrifice the bill for the sake of opposition unity.

Describing the unity in opposition as issue-based, she said that BJP has received a letter from the NCP on the Panchayat type OBC reservation in the bill.

When asked about chances of the passage of the bill in the Lok Sabha in the second half of the budget session, Mrs Swaraj said that there is no change in the stand of the party on the Women's reservation.

Strongly criticising the government for using marshals to evict members from the Rajya Sabha ahead of the debate on the constitutional amendment bill, leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mr Arun Jaitley charged the government of poor floor co-ordination. The two leaders sought to take credit for their role in the passage of the bill in the Rajya Sabha, where the government is in minority.

In a joint statement by Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, BJP claimed that the united opposition succeeded in exposing the poor floor management of the government when the civil liability for nuclear damage bill was deferred. They expressed hope that this will compel the government to revisit its decision to table the bill in the second part of the budget session.

In response to questions from reporters, the BJP leaders expressed satisfaction at the performance of the party in the first part of the budget session and claimed that they were successful in cornering the government on the price rise issue.
