In Bihar the Bhartiya Janta Party retained the Purnea assembly seat. The BJP candidate Smt Kiran Kesahri defeated his nearest rival Ram Charitra Yadav of Congress. The by-election was necessitated following the murder of BJP MLA Raj Kishore Keshari.
