BJP Parliamentary Party to meet on Tuesday to formally elect Narendra Modi as its leader

BJP Parliamentary Party will meet in New Delhi on Tuesday to formally elect Narendra Modi as its leader. A decision to this effect was taken by the party Parliamentary Board at its meeting today. The meeting, chaired by party president Rajnath Singh, was attended by senior party leaders including L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitely, Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari.

Later, briefing reporters Rajnath Singh said, NDA allies will also be invited for a meeting on the same day after the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting. He said, the Board adopted a resolution unanimously hailing the verdict of the people to the BJP-led NDA to govern the country. He said, it is for the first time that any non-Congress political party got overwhelming majority since Independence. Singh thanked the people for reposing faith in the party and said that the party intends to make India strong and self-reliant.

BJP chief also clarified that no date has been fixed for swearing-in of Modi as the Prime Minister and it will be decided after the Parliamentary Party meeting. The Parliamentary Board meeting also decided to send party leader Thawarchand Gehlot as observer to hold a meeting of legislative party in Gujarat to find a new leader to replace Narendra Modi as Chief Minister.

Earlier, Narendra Modi thanked the party workers and supporters for the splendid victory in the Lok Sabha elections. Addressing them at party headquarters, Modi attributed the victory to the tireless efforts of the party workers since 1952. He said the outcome of the elections has generated a new confidence in the party.

Modi was given a rousing reception at the Delhi airport after his arrival from Gandhinagar. A number of senior BJP leaders, including party chief Rajnath Singh received him.

Thousands of party activists and supporters greeted the leader throughout his roadshow from airport to party headquarters. Delhi Police had made elaborate security arrangements for the free passage of Modi from airport to party headquarters.
