BJP Parliamentary board to meet today to discuss strategy in J&K, J'khand; Hemant Soren resigns as J'khand CM

BJP Parliamentary board will meet in New Delhi today to discuss the party's strategy in view of Assembly election results in Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir. The board will discuss its possibility of forming an alliance with PDP and National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir and also deliberate on its Chief Ministerial candidate in Jharkhand. The Parliamentary Board, the highest decision-making body of the party, is likely to appoint observers for both the states for taking further steps in government formation.

The meeting will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and Union Ministers Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj among others. The Prime Minister had a meeting with BJP top brass, including Amit Shah, yesterday and discussed the political situation emerging in the two states after the election result. BJP got an absolute majority in Jharkhand yesterday, while it was the second largest party after PDP in the hung Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

Of the 87 seats in Jammu and Kashmir, PDP clinched 28 seats followed by BJP with 25. The BJP won all the seats from Jammu region, while it failed to open its account in the Kashmir valley. National Conference bagged 15 seats, with Congress winning 12. Others won seven. It was the best ever show by PDP and BJP in the state, while it was the worst performance by the National Conference. BJP President Amit Shah has said that all options are open for alliance with other parties to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir. The State BJP chief Jugal Kishore Sharma said that the next Chief Minister in Jammu and Kashmir will be from BJP.

In Jharkhand, of the 81 seats, BJP bagged 37, with its ally All Jharkhand Students Union, AJSU winning 5. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, JMM was second with 19 seats. Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) won 8 seats, while Congress got 6. Six seats went to Others. After the results, Hemant Soren resigned as the Jharkhand Chief Minister. After submitting his resignation to the Governor in Ranchi, Soren told reporters that his party will discharge responsibilities of a responsible opposition. He said his party leadership will review the elections results. Responding to a question, Soren said, he tried to give good governance in the state during his short regime. Our correspondent reports that bjp has initiated the process for the formation of new government in the state.
