BJP moves EC saying Sonia meeting Shahi Imam aimed at polarising polls

The BJP has approached the Election
Commission on Sonia Gandhi's meeting with Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, saying the step was a violation of the model code and demanded stern action. It also alleged that such a meeting was aimed at polarising elections and could lead to a communal flare-up. BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and convener of the election cell R Ramakrishna said, as per the Model Code of Conduct, there shall be no appeal to caste or communal feelings for securing votes.

Earlier Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath had said that the Commission will take cognizance if it receives a complaint against Sonia Gandhi's meeting with Shahi Imam. He was replying to a question at a press conference in Jammu yesterday on BJP's demand for sou motu cognizance of the meeting four days ago.
