In Goa, BJP- MGP combine will form the government with BJP winning on its own absolute majority with 21 seats and MGP getting three in the 40 member assembly. Congress got nine and Independents and others seven.
Bharatiya Janata Party Legislative Board meeting would be convened in the afternoon today to formally elect its new leader. Senior leaders Mr. Venkaiah Naidu and Mr. Ravishankar Prasad would be present as the Central Observers on this occasion.
Speaking to reporters in Panaji last evening, BJP leader Mr. Manohar Parrikar told that following this there would be another meeting of the BJP-MGP combine to chalk out the next course of action with regard to formation of the new Government in the state.
Meanwhile, the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Spokesman Mr. Shantaram Naik told media persons that the party has accepted the verdict of the people and it would perform the role of constructive Opposition in the Assembly.
The party is also likely to appoint a high-level committee to look into the causes of the debacle in the elections and come out with the remedial measures with regard to political strategy, he added.
Chief Minister Mr. Digamber Kamat submitted his resignation of the post yesterday even before completion of the counting process.
Earlier, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the State Assembly Elections. It bagged twenty one seats along with its combine partner Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party winning three seats out of the total forty seats securing the unprecedented mandate.
The ruling Congress could manage to win only nine seats while the alliance partner Nationalist Congress Party drawing blank.
All India Trinamool Congress Party which tried to make maiden foray into the state could not even open the account. Goa Vikas Party got two seats while the independents claimed five seats.
A new record was created when the electorate constituting largely of women and youth participated wholeheartedly and registered 81.43 per cent polling held on last Saturday.
The highest polling percentage recorded earlier was of 72.47 per cent during the Assembly Elections held in 1989.
