BJP today hit out at the Congress saying unnecessary controversy is being created on the issue of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's image in Khadi and Village Industries Commission, KVIC calendar in place of Mahatma Gandhi.

Briefing reporters in New Delhi, party spokesman Sambit Patra said, there is no rule in the KVIC of featuring Mahatma Gandhi on calendars. He said, Mr Modi's image on calendars does not amount to any violation. He said, the NDA government, in fact, is promoting the vision and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi.

Sambit Patra added that during last ten years of UPA regime, the sale of khadi products was in the range of 2 to 7 per cent, whereas in the NDA regime it rose to 35 per cent. Mr Patra said, a big jump sale of khadi products could be made possible due to Prime Minister's appeal to people to purchase Khadi products. He accused the Congress of politicising the issue.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, Khadi and Gandhiji are symbols of Indian history, self-reliance and struggle and removing Gandhiji's photo is a sin.
