Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the single largest party winning 851 seats in the Maharashtra municipal council polls conducted in 164 civic bodies which includes 147 municipal councils and 17 nagar panchayats. Results for 3510 out of total 3733 seats of councillors and municipal council presidents have been declared so far. <br/><br/>Shiv Sena stood fourth in the tally winning 514 seats, behind Congress who won 643 seats and Nationalist Congress Party, NCP won 638 seats. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, MNS logged victory at 16 seats, CPM won 12 seats, BSP 9 seats and others won 708 seats. In elections for municipal council presidents of 147 towns, the BJP had won 57 till the last reports of counting came in. The Shiv Sena had won 24, the Congress 20 and the NCP 19.<br/><br/>Following the major victory of BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has thanked the people of Maharashtra. In a tweet message, he thanked the people of Maharashtra for placing their faith in BJP in local body polls. Mr Modi said, this is a win for pro-poor and development politics of BJP. In total, including first phase held on Sunday, elections are being held for 212 civic bodies, comprising municipal councils and nagar panchayats, in four phases. The next rounds of voting are scheduled on December 14, December 18, and January 8.
