BJP on Saturday dragged former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to counter Congress over Naga peace accord saying she had not briefed any of the north east Chief Ministers during the Shillong accord in 1975. Rejecting the allegation that Centre did not take north eastern states into confidence before the Naga accord, the party accused the Congress of forcing its Chief Ministers of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to oppose it even though they had initially welcomed it.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi, BJP leader and Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman alleged that the former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had spoken about Teesta accord during his Bangladesh visit but West Bengal Chief Minister was not briefed. She said Nagaland Chief Minister was in constant touch with Prime Minister on the Naga peace pact and he along with an all party delegation had met Mr. Narendra Modi two days before accord was signed.

She also refuted the charges that even Home Minister was not fully aware of the agreement and said in his speech Mr. Modi had appreciated the role of Rajnath Singh in the matter. Ms. Sitharaman attacked the Congress for questioning the peace accord and said the issues of national security requires all parties to speak in one voice.

The Minister said both Centre and NSCN(I-M) are working on the details of the pact and it will be made public at an appropriate time.

Meanwhile, sticking to its stand, the Congress said the Chief Ministers of Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh were not consulted before signing the peace accord. Talking to AIR, party spokesperson R P N Singh said, Parliament is in session and the government should put the facts of the accord before it. He hoped that the signing of the accord is not a diversionary tactic to take the heat off of the BJP.
