BJP criticizes govt’s decision on climate change

The BJP on Friday criticized government’s decision to unilaterally announce targets for carbon intensity emission as a bad strategy. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, BJP spokesman Mr Arun Jaitley said that the 20 to 25 per cent cuts announced on Thursday have raised India’s base line for negotiations at Copenhagen.

Stating that the decision has been taken under pressure from developed countries, Mr Jaitley demanded the government to reconsider its view. He also demanded a clarification on the issue from the Prime Minister in Parliament.

Mr Jaitley said that the announcement has diluted India’s stand on the issue and described it as a bandwagon effect as some other nations have announced unilateral cuts.

Replying to a question on the Communal Violence Bill passed by the Cabinet Thursday, Mr Jaitley said that law and order is a state subject and any central legislature on the issue will be an attack on the federal structure. He however clarified that he was not aware of the full content of the Bill.
