BJP and Youth Congress workers today protested in the national capital against the Delhi government's decision to hike VAT on petrol and diesel. The protesters shouted slogans against the Aam Aadmi Party government and demanded immediate withdrawal of the hike. Talking to media on the protest site, Delhi BJP Chief Satish Upadhyay alleged that the increase is betrayal of trust of the people of the city. He said, on the one hand, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has set aside 526 crore rupees for advertisement and personal publicity, on the other, his government has increased the VAT resulting in burden on common man.

Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza termed the hike as anti-people. Talking to AIR, she said it clearly shows that the AAP government is insensitive. Meanwhile, AAP has justified the hike saying the VAT has been increased to bring uniformity in the tax rates with neighbouring states. Party spokesperson Raghav Chaddha told AIR that a similar decision has already been taken by BJP ruled states of Harayan and Punjab. Yesterday, Delhi government had increased the VAT on petrol from present 20 to 25 percent and on diesel from 12.5 to 16.6 percent effective from today.
