BJP committed to create a country free of disparity: Nitin Gadkari

Union Shipping minister Nitin Gadkari has said the BJP government is committed to ensuring that the country attains prosperity and becomes free of socio-economic disparity so that citizens don't "feel the need" for reservations. Addressing a valedictory session of the two-day Maharashtra BJP Executive meeting in Mumbai yesterday, he said poverty has no caste. He said the government's economic policy is of employment generation and the aim is to create a prosperous country, so that its citizens don't feel like asking for reservations.

Gadkari's comments came in the backdrop of a series of protests by the Maratha community in Maharashtra which has been seeking reservations in government jobs and educational institutions. The community, which is also demanding the modification of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, will hold a rally in Mumbai after Diwali this year.
