BJP accuses govt of grossly misusing official machinery

The BJP today has accused the government of grossly misusing official machinery and institutions for its political ends.

Initiating a debate on the short duration discussion on the alleged phone tapping in the Rajya Sabha, the leader of the opposition, Arun Jaitley said that the Home Minister in his statement has only said that the government has not authorized tapping of four political leaders but did not deny tapping itself. He said, the Home Minister's statement has not only been economical with language but the truth as well and there is no denial of the crux of the allegations.

He also said that the denial by one of the departments of the Finance Ministry in the case of tapping in connection with the allocation of 2G specturm is also limited and does not specifically deny the tapping of PR agency allegedly involved.

Mr. Jaitley said that there are no absolute powers with the government to use the laws which only permits the use of intelligence for bugging phones in the cases of extreme importance involving either public emergency or public safety. The discussion is continuing.
