BJD MLA shot dead by suspected Maoists in Odisha

In Odisha, a ruling BJD MLA, Jagabandhu Majhi and his security guard have been shot dead by suspected Maoists. The incident happened at Gona Hatapada under Raighar police station, about 100 km from Nowarangpur district headquarters. The 39-year-old tribal MLA, who represented Umerkote assembly constituency, was distributing land records to the people when he was attacked. The three assailants, suspected to be Maoists, came in motorcycle and fled away after committing the crime.Majhi, a first time MLA, had been confined to a wheelchair after he was attacked by unknown people in 2004. Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik has strongly condemned the incident and has ordered investigation into the incident by the crime branch of police. Senior police officials have rushed to the spot and different aspects are being examined to ascertain the facts before the killers could be identified.
