Bird flu resurfaces in Odisha; culling to begin today

In Odisha, culling of poultry in capital Bhubaneswar will start from today following detection of the avian influenza Bird Flu. The Centre has given go-ahead signal to the state government for culling of over 28,800 poultry birds in Central Poultry Development Organisation (CPDO) and also all poultry population within its 3km radius. The Bhopal-based High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory has confirmed bird flu (H5N1) among the poultry population of CPDO at Bhubaneswar. The Odisha Government has imposed restriction on movement of poultry from and into Bhubaneswar. 10 rapid response teams have been constituted for surveillance. Bhubaneswar is the fifth place in Odisha after Keranga, Betanati, Bonai and Angul where bird flu has been detected.
