Bill to enhance compensation for air travellers passed in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha today passed a bill to empower the Central government to revise the liability limits of air carriers and compensation concerning injury and loss of baggage and cargo. The Carriage by Air (Amendment) Bill, 2015 is in conformity with the provisions of the Montreal Convention to which India acceded to in 2009. <br/><br/>The Convention establishes airline liability in the case of death, injury or delay to passengers or in cases of delay, damage or loss of baggage and cargo. The bill intends to increase the compensation for death in an air accident to over one crore rupees from nearly 89 lakh rupees now.<br/><br/>Replying to a debate on the Bill, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju assured the members that the government has accorded high priority to the security and safety of passengers. He said, the government has also formulated a Draft National Civil Aviation Policy, 2015 and the comments and suggestions received by the Aviation Ministry in this regard are under consideration.<br/><br/>The policy aims at providing a conducive environment and a level playing field to various aviation sub-sectors like Airlines, Airports, Cargo, General Aviation, Aerospace Manufacturing, and Skill Development.
