The West Bengal Government has decided to set-up a new autonomous body in Darjeeling replacing Darjeeling Gorkha Autonomous Hill Council. A Bill to this effect will be placed in the next session of the State Assembly. The State Government entered into an agreement with the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha on Tuesday after Secretary level talks to settle Darjeeling crisis giving more autonomy to hill people. Announcing this in Kolkata, the State Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee said that she has urged the Centre to convene a tripartite meeting in Darjeeling itself within a week to endorse the Secretary level agreement. AIR Kolkata correspondent reports that the new autonomous body in the hill will be formed through election. Besides the State Government has also decided to constitute a nine-member committee to recommend the territorial jurisdiction of the proposed autonomous body. The State Chief Secretary Mr. Samar Ghosh said that the new autonomous body will have Administrative, Executive and Financial powers and will be able to frame rules and regulations under state act. The bye-partite agreement was also decided to set-up Board of Administrators under Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council Act to start developmental activities in the hill until new autonomous body is formed. The Chief Secretary categorically said that the issue of separate Gorkhaland in Darjeeling was not discussed in the two-day Secretary level talks.
