Bikram Singh becomes Nepal Army General

Army Chief General Bikram Singh conferred with the honorary rank of the General of the Nepal Army by President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav at a ceremony in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Dr Baburam Bhattarai and Chief of Army Staff of Nepal Army Chhatraman Singh Gurung, were among others present on the occasion. The Indian and Nepali armies have a tradition of conferring the rank of honorary general to each other’s chiefs.

Earlier in the day, General Singh called on Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai. In a brief interaction with the media he said, that he brought the greetings of the people of India and the army. He said that fact that he made his first visit abroad to Nepal after taking over as Army Chief signifies the special significance India gives to Nepal. Replying to a question on resuming arms supply to Nepal, General Singh said the government of India and Nepal are moving towards it.
