Bihar Lokayukta Bill, 2011, was today passed in the state Assembly. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, the new Lokayukta Bill had been made stronger and effective to eliminate corruption. The opposition parties had questioned the need for rushing through with the Bill and said, a debate should have been held among a cross-section of people and media houses before its enactment as legislation. AIR Patna Correspondent reports that the Chief Minister, former Chief Ministers and Ministers have been included under the ambit of New Lokayuta Bill. The Speaker of the State Assembly and the Chairman of the Legislative Council besides legislators and former legislators, have also come under its purview. The Lokayukta Bill also has public servants, employees of the government and Corporations or organisations receiving government grants, under its scanner. According to the Bill, the institution of the Lokayukta is a multi-member body comprising one chairman and two members. Of these three, at least two persons shall be judicial members. Five members Selection Committee headed by Legislative Council will have power to put in place a search committee of members from judiciary.
