Brisk polling was reported in the first phase of election for the Bihar Assembly polls with an estimated 45 to 47 percent voters casting their votes. The polling held amid tight security arrangements in 47 assembly constituency ended peacefully at 5 PM. In flood hit Simri Bakhtiarpur assembly constituency, polling concluded at 3 pm.AIR correspondent K. K. Lal reports that polling percentage is likely to increase as reports are still coming from different constituencies. One hundred nine persons were detained as preventive measures during Thursday’s poll. Polling was held in eight districts of Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnea, Katihar, Madhepura and Saharsa. The electoral fortune of 631 candidates including 52 women were sealed in Electronic Voting Machine after Thursday’s voting. Important candidates whose fate to be decided include State Congress Chief Mehboob Ali Kaiser and three state Ministers Vijendra Prasad Yadav,Narendra Narayan Yadav and Renu Kumari.Elaborate security arrangements were made to ensure free and fair voting. Jawans of central para-military forces were also deployed on booths for peaceful poll. The border of the state with Nepal and West Bengal were sealed to prevent any infiltration of anti social elements. Jawans of Special Task Force kept air surveillance from helicopters as well to ensure trouble free polls.
