Life was affected during the dawn to dusk bandh called by the RJD in Bihar on Thursday with sporadic incidents of violence and police firing in East Champaran district reported. The bandh was called to protest the price rise of essential commodities. <br/><br/>Though the RJD had exempted the Railways, bandh supporters blocked railway tracks near Chapra, Begusarai, Samastipur, Jehanabad and Jamui, disrupting rail traffic for four hours. Tyres were burnt on national highways in Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Vaishali, East and West Champaran and checkposts were jammed on the Indo-Nepal border near Jogabani and Forbesganj in Araria district. <br/><br/>Officials said that several shops in Araria and a mobile shop in Patna were looted. In East Champaran district, police fired in air after a lathicharge failed to disperse RJD supporters blocking the road at Dhangarha. Bandh supporters also stoned vehicles in Begusarai, Patna, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur, besides a train at Jamui. <br/><br/>Over 6,500 bandh supporters were taken into custody including RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, his former chief minister wife Rabri Devi, former Union ministers Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, state party chief Abdul Bari Siddiqui, and LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan.
