The Union Forest and Environment Minister Mr. Jairam Ramesh has declared the biggest river island- Majuli in Assam as an ‘eco-sensitive zone’ of the country in view of unabated erosion caused to it by the Brahmaputra and the continuous threat to its existence. He said the Centre will issue notification in this regard with immediate effect. <br/><br/>The Minister also announced a five-crore rupee package from the Centre for protection of the River Island and development of its forest cover. He said Kaziranga National Park and Majuli are two glories of Assam and the Centre is very serious for their protection. The Minister was on a visit to the river island Majuli yesterday.
