In Bhopal, several programmes are being organized today to mark the 29th anniversary of gas leak tragedy, one of the worst industrial disaster of the world. On the intervening night of 2nd and 3rd December in 1984, several hundred people were killed and scores of people were maimed for life when the Methyl Isocyanate-MIC gas was leaked from the pesticide plant of Union Carbide. Our Bhopal correspondent reports that an all religion prayer meeting was held this morning in Bhopal’s Barkatullah Bhawan to pay the homage to the victims of gas tragedy.
Rallies and meetings are being
organized as survivors of Bhopal gas tragedy are paying homage to the victims. Non government organizations say that despite tall claims of authorities not much has been done for the gas victims. Gas victims are still facing problems like proper medical facilities, safe drinking water, and better living conditions. Besides adequate compensation, disposal of toxic waste lying in the defunct plant of Union Carbide is still a major issue after the 29 years of the tragedy. Warren Anderson, who is the main accused in the Bhopal gas tragedy criminal case, is still out of the clutches of Indian authorities.
