In Anadman and Nocobar Islands, the first tranche of Resident Identity (Smart) Card under the coastal National Population Register Project were given away by the union Home Minister P. Chidambaram at Prothrapur village near Portblair. Mrs. Bhoolakshmi received the first card in the country from the Home Minister under this project. Speaking on the occasion Chidambaram said that the Resident Identity (Smart) Card is not only for identification but will be one of the measures for strengthening the security of the coastline in the Country.He said, 9 maritime states and 4 Union Territories have been identified for this Project and 3331 Coastal villages have been covered in the first phase of the Project. AIR correspondent reports that about 2.56 lakh cards will be distributed to those who have completed 18 years of age in the Islands. The Home Minister will visit Nicobar on Sunday and will be back to Port Blair in afternoon on the same day.
