In Assam, the week long post harvest festival Bhogali Bihu, popularly known as the Magh Bihu, has been celebrated across the State with traditional pomp and gaiety from. Today is being celebrated as the ‘Uruka’ of the Bihu. People are organizing community feasts this evening across the State to mark the occasion. The women folk of the State are busy preparing delicious local food items and sweets. Cultural programmes are also being organized in most parts of the State coinciding with the ‘Uruka’.After spending the Uruka night, people will light traditional bonfire in the paddy fields and open grounds tomorrow morning. Maghi Melas are being organized across the State where locally-produced items are exhibited. Traditional Bulbul bird fight of Hajo in Kamrup district and the Buffalo fight in Nagaon and Morigaon districts attract large numbers of tourists to the State during the Bhogali Bihu days.Assam Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi have greeted the people of the State on the occasion of Bhogali Bihu. In separate messages, they said Bihu is an occasion that strengthens the feeling of unity, integrity, communal harmony and brotherhood in the Assamese society.AIR Correspondent reports, people of the State are joining in the Bhogali Bihu festival fearlessly this year with law and order situation returning to almost normal. Most of the underground outfits of the State have come forward for negotiation with the Government after laying down arms.
