Bhakti becomes 1st Goan girl to win Women's Grandmaster title

Bhakti Kulkarni has become the first girl from Goa to win the Women's Grandmaster title. The 19-year old became a WGM after she accounted for International Woman Master Renata Gazik of Poland at the Orlova Women Grandmasters tournament in the Czech Republic on Sunday. Overall, Bhakti finished second in the tournament. While doing so, she also completed the necessary three norms to be awarded the title of Woman Grandmaster. Bhakti had earlier scored her first two norms at Merienbad in Czech Republic, and Kesckemet in Hungary. The chess champion will now head to Sri Lanka to participate in the Asian Junior Girls Championship in Colombo.
